I was checking out some of the games on the Experimental Gameplay Project's website, and they have a few cool games, but one out of all of them I found quite cool reminded me of a few old games I'd played a few years back. This is the projects goal in their own words...

The Experimental Gameplay Project:create 50 to 100 games in 1 semester. New games every week.

The Rules:

  • each game must be made in less than 7 days

  • each game must be made by one person, including all art, sound, and programming

  • each game must be based around a certain "toy" ie. "gravity", "vegetation", "swarm behavior", etc.

The one game that stood out for me was the Tower of Goo Game, which is similar in design to an old game called Bridge Builder AKA Pointiflex. Basically the idea is you build a structure (a tower in Tower of Goo, bridges in Bridge Builder/Pointifex) using simple nodes and supports and it has to support it's own weight against gravity. It seems there's several different takes on the same idea floating around in various demos and freeware games so I thought I'd share a few of them

Bridge Builder - Download
Pointifex (Bridge Builder II) - Download
Bridge Construction Set (Pointiflex II) - Download
Bridge It - Download (Nvidia Video Cards Only)
West Point Bridge Designer 2005 - Download
Tower of Goo - Download

Bridge Builder seems to be the first in the series, followed by Pointiflex, which along with Bridge Construction Set and Bridge It are all done by the same company, Chronic Logic. While West Point Bridge Designer seems to be more of a realistic simulation, possibly for engineering students. Tower of Goo seems to be a simple, fast gameplay take on the whole idea.
